Why do you take photos? Really think about it. Is it because you want to make money from it? There’s nothing wrong with that. Is it because you want to share the things you see with others? Again, nothing wrong with that. Finally, is it because you’re just doing it to preserve memories in physical form for yourself? Excellent…Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The reality of photography is that there is likely a little bit of each of those things behind it.
I take photos for all of those reasons, but I’m under no illusions that any of them except for reasons two and three will ever be true for me. I kind of figure most people fall into that demographic. After all, making money from art could come from a lot of talent, a lot of luck, a lot of connections, or absolutely none of those things…
I have moderate talents, moderate luck, and few connections. All things in moderation they say and I’m the definition of moderation. Look it up in a dictionary. I promise you’ll find me there on page 601, maybe. If you happen to not find me in your dictionary just look for me on Substack. I’ll be posting very “mid” photos of vegetables, chairs, doors, signs, and other uninspiring inanimate objects (like fish). And I’ll be doing it for myself…and you of course.
After thinking on it a little more, maybe I’m just searching for immortality and hoping that a piece of me will live on through some images that I capture. If I’m gone and forgotten I won’t know, but I would hope that someone remembers.
Hope you enjoyed the bit of everything. Grab yourself a coffee, tea, or shot of whisky after reading my drivel and ponder on your purpose in photography. Report back to me. I’m a teacher. I like reading student reports…NOT…

I’m like you, I’d like for a little something of me to live on or for someone to see when I’m no longer around. I didn’t used to think this way, tbh it’s only more recently that I felt this way. I love the photo of the cabbages, it’s the exact kind of photography I love looking at, and wouldn’t it be something to be remembered for a photo of cabbages on Vision3. I want that, haha.
